KEEPING HIS COOL: Jason Bowman,
at the Moray Leisure Centre ice rink in Elgin, is through to the next round of
Dancing on Ice. Gordon Lennox
AN ELGIN ice-skating
champion is through to the next round of judging on a television-screened
national competition, despite suffering from a knee injury.
Jason Bowman, 20, of
Reynolds Crescent, appeared on the ITV show Dancing on Ice on Sunday and was
selected by skating legends Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean to go through to
the next round of Ice Star.
If he wins the
competition, the four-times British champion will go on tour with the Dancing
on Ice performers.
Mr Bowman, who is also
a five-times Scottish medalist, has picked up awards since he began competing
at the age of 13.
He was Scottish novice
champion in 2003 and came third in the senior men’s category at an international
in Austria in October.
The former Elgin
Academy pupil, who works part-time at Moray Leisure Centre to pay for the hours
he practices there, also uses the gym and yoga classes to keep himself fit, but
said a knee injury has recently prevented him from taking part in competitions.
He said: “It’s a
problem which came from doing too much ice skating when I was a teenager and am
currently waiting for surgery. “I’m going to take a couple of months off to
recover but aim to be ready to compete again next season, which starts in
September.”
Despite appearing in
front of Torvill and Dean, he said his experience at competitions has taught
him to not be nervous on the TV show.
He said: “When you are out there it’s just you and the ice, and you don’t think about the judges or what’s going on around you.”
