report on the MORAVIAN JUNIOR TRAINING DAY

MORAVIAN VICTORY IN SWEDISH CHRISTMAS SPRINT
(
extract from a Swedish newspaper is shown below)

International participation at Länna's klubbtävling Christmas Sprint was encouraged this year. Michael Dearman from Scotland, won with four seconds ahead of Mikael Antilla-Eriksson. After the victory the idea was quickly raised that next year’s Christmas Sprint is arranged in Scotland, since the victor always has to plan the event the following year.

The previous year's winner, Tommy Eriksson, was therefore planner and used a pleasant area of woodland northwest from “Kvarnerud”. There was a mass start for everyone and the first control in the main class was common to everyone as they came back to it twice more. In-between were two loops which runners did in a different random order. At the last visit to this control the lead was tight between Michael Dearman, Klara Alm and Mikael Antilla-Eriksson. The ultimate four controls were the same for everyone.

Therefore, it was amazing when the first two approaching the finish were Tomas's Jansson and Örjan Sjöström. However they had forgotten a control and suddenly turned back for it. Then the Scottish winner arrived just ahead of 2005 winner Mikael. Michael is here visiting family friends.

“Was this the first time you have orienteered?”- “No, I orienteer at home in Scotland”, Michael replies laughing.
”Did you expect victory?” - “Not at all, but it feels great.”

Bryony Beck is presented with her award as the Summer Junior League winner.

Many thanks go to Penelope and Steve Smirthwaite and Douglas Murray for their great efforts in representing our club at Spey 07. Thanks also go to the many helpers who laboured long and hard at the Culbin event. It was a great week and it was made especially good because of the gatherings in the club tent to congratulate and commiserate as appropriate each day, and to discuss route choices etc. A few photos of the week can be seen here.
